Anything Else Under Heaven

Queer homage meets art history. A visual love letter to seven probably queer masters of Western art.

This series reclaims the homocentrism and homoeroticism embedded throughout Western art, often overlooked, but never absent.

In studying artists whose work or lives suggest queerness—through their subjects, their relationships, their chosen families—a pattern emerges. These were men whose lives didn’t fit the mold, whose art spoke in codes, and whose queerness, while unspoken, was unmistakable.

Anything Else Under Heaven is both homage and reinterpretation: a celebration of the (very likely) queerness of Caravaggio, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, Konstantin Somov, Duncan Grant, Henry Scott Tuke, and Paul Cadmus. Through my lens, I revisit their styles and subjects, and turn up the volume on the queerness already humming beneath the surface.

This series is currently searching for a gallery premiere and a photo book publisher. If you have a home for my work, please reach out to photosmithnyc@gmail.com
